About Millennium green

The wonderful Millennium Green was created in 2000 as part of a nationwide initiative by the Countryside Agency to create accessible open spaces. It is an area of land on the west side of Laverstoke Lane open to public access and recreation.

Its irregular shape surrounds the Parish sports facilities and encompasses a children’s play area (refurbished in 2017 thanks to being awarded a grant of £30,667 by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council), an ornamental garden, field & woodland area and an old watercress bed.  The Green was promoted by the Parish Council and supported with funding from the Lottery commission, Basingstoke and Deane BC and through village fundraising.

Most of the land was purchased from Portals, including the existing playground, to secure it for the village for future generations. Creating the space we see today took a substantial amount of enthusiastic village volunteer effort; clearing of the woodland and pond, building paths, a quiet garden area and an expanded play area and providing seating.
